Key takeaways: No claims discounts and health insurance

If you don’t claim on your health insurance, you may be able to build up a no claims discount (NCD), similar to how you do with car insurance. This can lower your renewal premium.

Some claims don’t affect your no claims discount.

You may also be able to protect your no claims discount by paying a fee.

Can you get a no claims discount on health insurance?

Yes, if you don’t claim during the year, you can often get a no claims discount (NCD). If you claim, the discount will usually go down – although not all claims will affect it. With an AXA Health Plan, if all claims in the policy year total less than £250, it won’t be affected at all.

Most health insurers will offer you a no claims discount. If you don’t claim during the year, you’ll then get a discount on your renewal price. Each year you don’t claim, your no claims discount gets bigger, so you save more. If you make a claim your no claims discount gets smaller, so you save less (although you may still have some discount). Each provider will have a cap on the savings you can make with your no claims discounts.

Each person on your health insurance will usually have their own no claims discount.

Which claims will affect my no claims discount?

If your health insurance pays for treatment, that will usually affect your no claims discount. However, some health insurers don’t count some claims when working out your discount.

If you have an AXA Health Plan, we won’t count:

  • claims in the policy year, as long as the combined total is less than £250.
  • using our online GP service
  • using one of our other online services, such as our muscles, bones and joints service, which gives you access to video or phone appointments with a physiotherapist
  • treatment where you paid the full amount yourself, because it cost less than your excess
  • payments we give you for using the NHS for your treatment
  • treatment that you pay for yourself.

Your health insurer may have different rules, so it’s best to check before claiming.

Can I protect my no claims discount?

When you’re due to renew, you may be able to protect your no claims discount for a small fee. This will mean that if you claim, you’ll stay at the same level on the no claims discount scale, so your no claims discount will stay the same at renewal.

Your health insurer may ask you some health questions to check if they can offer this protection.

Can I pay for treatment and keep my no claims discount?

For some treatment, it may make sense to pay the cost yourself – especially if it won’t cost much, and you’re not likely to need more treatment.

If you pay for treatment yourself, it's possible that you can keep your no claims discount at the same level. Check your policy documents to see whether you need to inform your health insurer.
