Diagnostics cover option

Waiting for a health condition to be diagnosed can be an extremely worrying time. This option fast-tracks the process of finding out what’s wrong if you or one of your employees becomes unwell. There’s more choice over the time, day and location of appointments, making everything easier to manage – for you and your team.

The Diagnostics option cannot be purchased with the Treatment option.

Quick to find out what’s wrong

  • If someone on your team develops a condition or illness, they can go private for a prompt diagnosis (a GP referral is required). 
  • We’ll cover up to two specialist consultations plus the diagnostic tests the specialist refers your employee for.
  • If they need an outpatient diagnostic surgical procedure to find out what’s wrong, we’ll pay for this.
  • We’ll also pay for outpatient CT, MRI and PET scans they might need – in full when carried out at a facility in our directory of hospitals.

Melanie is 33 and owns her own landscape gardening business based in Bath. Melanie has been experiencing severe pain in her back for the past few months which has been affecting her ability to carry out her job. As Melanie’s job is very hands on, she’s had to take a lot of time off which has meant that she has had to turn down new contracts. Melanie visited her specialist for a consultation and was referred for an MRI scan on her back to try and identify the cause of her pain. As she had the diagnostics option on her small business health insurance, Melanie was able to skip the NHS waiting list and have her MRI scan at a private hospital close to home. She was also able to have a consultation with a specialist who talked her through her diagnosis and suggested what her treatment plan might be.

What this option will pay for

  • Outpatient specialist consultations: up to two of these a year.
  • Diagnostic tests when your specialist refers you: no yearly limit.
  • CT, MRI and PET scans, under a specialist referral: paid in full if your employees scans take place at a scanning centre (or hospital listed as a scanning centre) in our directory. If they happen at a centre not listed in our directory, we’ll pay up to the normal daily rates for these.
  • Outpatient diagnostic surgical procedures: there’s no yearly limit on these – whatever it takes to find out what’s wrong.

What's not covered?

  • Doctor@Hand - Unlimited access to our 24/7 online GP service, Doctor@Hand (provided by Doctor Care Anywhere). Appointments are subject to availability. Fair usage policy applies.
  • Working Body - Our Working Body service gives you and your team aged 18 and over access to a physiotherapist over the phone, without the need for a GP referral.
  • Health at Hand - our telephone helpline is open 24/7 for health information and support from nurses and counsellors. Midwives and pharmacists are available from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, until 4pm on Saturday, and until 12pm on Sunday.
  • Heart and cancer nurses - available by phone, who are experienced in supporting you and your family when living with these conditions.
  • Proactive Health Gateway - our online platform giving you and your team access to wellbeing support that's tailored to their individual goals. They can use the AXA Health Age calculator to find out their 'Health Age' and follow in-depth guidance and make suggested changes to get healthier.
  • Healthy rewards - including discounts across products at ActivePlus, our online health store.
