It’s more important than you might think
Healthy muscles, bones and joints are vital to our overall wellbeing. Good musculoskeletal (MSK) health is fundamental when it comes to being strong, independent, active and generally healthy throughout life.
Muscle, bone and joint conditions can affect anyone, and they can be noticeable at work. In fact, they accounted for 6.6 million lost working days in 2022-23.1 So organisations that commit to preventing, treating and raising awareness of MSK issues could help avoid their impact on productivity and efficiency at the same time as helping their people live in good health.
Muscle bone and joint issues are the third most common cause of sickness absence in the UK after stress, depression and anxiety.1
It’s thought that over 20 million people, almost a third of the UK population, have a musculoskeletal condition.2
Around 1 in 10 UK employees have a musculoskeletal condition.3

What can employees do if musculoskeletal (MSK) treatment is required?
For some employees, there’s a point at which a musculoskeletal problem needs extra attention or help from a professional. At this stage, they need to be able to get an assessment or seek advice. Thankfully, only a small proportion of MSK issues require medical or surgical intervention, but there are some conditions for which it’s important to have that option.
