Diagnostics Only cover option
Waiting for a health condition to be diagnosed can be an extremely worrying time. This option, when included with your business health insurance, gets you fast access to diagnostics if you or one of your employees becomes unwell. There’s more choice over the time, day and location of appointments, making everything easier to manage – for you and your team.
The Diagnostics Only option cannot be purchased with the Treatment option.
Quick to find out what’s wrong
- If someone on your team develops a condition or illness, they can go private for a prompt diagnosis (a GP referral is required).
- We’ll cover up to two specialist consultations per year, plus the diagnostic tests the specialist refers your employee for.
- If they need an outpatient diagnostic surgical procedure to find out what’s wrong, we’ll pay for this.
- We’ll also pay for outpatient CT, MRI and PET scans they might need – in full when carried out at a facility in our directory of hospitals.

Melanie is 33 and owns her own landscape gardening business based in Bath. Melanie has been experiencing severe pain in her back for the past few months which has been affecting her ability to carry out her job. As Melanie’s job is very hands on, she’s had to take a lot of time off which has meant that she has had to turn down new contracts. After receiving a referral from her GP, Melanie visited her specialist for a consultation and was referred for an MRI scan on her back to try to identify the cause of her pain. As she had the Diagnostics Only option on her small business health insurance, Melanie was able to skip the NHS waiting list and have her MRI scan at a private hospital close to home. She was also able to have a consultation with a specialist who talked her through her diagnosis and suggested what her treatment plan might be.
What this option will pay for
- Outpatient specialist consultations: up to two of these a year.
- CT, MRI and PET scans, under a specialist referral: paid in full if your employees scans take place at a scanning centre (or hospital listed as a scanning centre) in the plan's hospital list If they happen at a centre not listed in our directory, we’ll pay up to the normal daily rates for these.
- Diagnostic tests when your specialist refers you: no yearly limit.
- Outpatient diagnostic surgical procedures: there’s no yearly limit on these – whatever it takes to find out what’s wrong.
What benefits are included as standard?
24/7 online GP service
Access to video or phone appointments with a GP or another registered clinical practitioner, where your employees will have plenty of time to talk through their health concerns. AXA Doctor at Hand is powered by Doctor Care Anywhere. Appointments are subject to availability. GPs are available 24/7 and other registered clinical practitioners are available 8am – 10pm.
Care for cancer and heart conditions
Our experienced healthcare professionals are available at the end of the phone day or night. Speak to our specialist cancer and heart nurses 9am-5pm Monday – Friday. Outside these hours our experienced nurses and counsellors provide round the clock support by phone.
Specialist appointment booking service
We can help your employees find an appropriate specialist. You'll need to include either an Outpatient option or our Diagnostics Only option with your business healthcare plan for the consultation to be covered.
Easing the pressure with physio
Access to our online muscles, bone and joint service to help your people manage or alleviate joint and muscle pain – whether it’s a bad back or sprained ankle. A physiotherapist will assess their symptoms online or over the phone and talk to them about what they could mean. Available for members aged 18 and over.
Health information and support
We’ll give your employees access to our 24/7 health support line. It comes as standard, no matter what cover options you choose, so your team can get help and support whether it's day or night.
The 24/7 health support line is not a diagnostic or advice service and it cannot respond to emergencies. If you require an urgent response or have a medical emergency please call 111/999 or attend A&E.
