Does hair removal make hair grow back thicker?

It’s widely believed that removing hair makes it grow back thicker, darker, or faster. However, studies have consistently found that regardless of the method, hair removal does not change the thickness, colour, or speed of hair growth.

One of the earliest studies on this topic, published in Anatomical Record1 , demonstrated that shaving had no impact on hair texture, growth rate, or density. Modern research2 confirms these findings, showing that shaving or cutting hair doesn’t influence hair’s growth or structure. Waxing and dermaplaning, which remove hair from the root, similarly have no effect on the thickness of regrowth.

Our AXA Health Mythbusters campaign revealed almost 1 in 5 UK adults incorrectly believe that shaving hair makes it grow back thicker.

Tips for managing hair regrowth

While removing hair does not cause it to grow back thicker, there are a few things you can do to look after your skin and protect it from any damaging effects of hair removal.

  • Exfoliate regularly: Prevent ingrown hairs and remove dead skin cells by gently exfoliating a few times a week.
  • Moisturise: Keeping your skin hydrated can reduce irritation and improve the feel of regrown hair.
  • Avoid over-shaving: Shaving too frequently can irritate the skin and make regrowth more noticeable.

How long does it take for hair to grow back?

The rate of hair regrowth depends on factors such as your age, genetics, and the area of the body.

  • Shaving: Regrowth may be noticeable within 1–3 days, as only the surface hair is removed.
  • Waxing: Since waxing removes hair from the root, regrowth typically begins after 3–4 weeks.
  • Dermaplaning: Vellus hair (peach fuzz) generally grows back in 2–4 weeks.
  • Epilating: Like waxing, epilation pulls hair from the root, leading to slower regrowth.

Hair grows in cycles, so different hairs in the same area may grow back at varying rates.

For longer-term results, options like laser hair removal or electrolysis can be more effective but require professional treatment and may be costly.

So will hair removal make my hair grow back thicker?

The idea that hair removal causes thicker, darker, or faster regrowth is a myth with no scientific basis. For those seeking smoother results, the key is to choose the right hair removal method and take good care of your skin.
