Key takeaways: How to choose the right health insurance for your business

Choosing health insurance for your business means thinking about your employees, your sector and your budget. With AXA Health, you can build a plan from a range of cover options — so you can tailor it to suit your business and budget. You can also offer different levels of cover to different groups of employees, helping you reward loyalty and seniority in a way that suits your business.

What cover options might suit my business?

The cover options that work best for your business will depend on your team, your sector and your budget. There's no single right answer — but thinking about the nature of your work is a good place to start.

Here are some examples of how different businesses might think about their cover:

Trades and construction
Employees in physical roles may be more likely to experience muscle, bone and joint problems. Therapies cover gives your team fast access to physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic treatment to help them recover and get back to work. Online muscles, bones and joints support is also included as standard with every plan for members aged 18 and over.

Office-based and professional services
High-pressure environments can take a toll on mental health. Mental Health cover and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provide confidential support for employees who are struggling. Dentist and Optician Cashback is also a practical benefit for employees spending long hours at screens.

Businesses where employees travel regularly
If your team travels frequently for work, Travel cover protects them for emergency medical treatment when they're overseas.

Whatever your sector, every AXA Health plan includes 24/7 access to a private GP and a health information phone line as standard, giving your team support from day one. The 24/7 health support line cannot respond to emergencies. If you require an urgent response or have a medical emergency please call 111/999 or attend A&E.

Can I offer different levels of cover to my employees?

Yes, with AXA Health you can create different categories of cover for different groups of employees. And it's a cost-effective way to reward seniority and loyalty within your business.

Here's an example plan based on 20 employees, with a total cost of £486.91 per month:¹

Category 3: junior employees (12 employees)
Mental Health cover and EAP Premier. Average cost: £3.57 per employee, per month.

Category 2: mid-level employees (5 employees)
Everything in Category 3, plus Treatment with Comprehensive Cancer Cover, Therapies and Standard Outpatient cover. Average cost: £33.04 per employee, per month.

Category 1: senior employees (3 employees)
Everything in Category 2, with Full Outpatient cover instead of Standard Outpatient, plus Private GP, Dentist and Optician Cashback and Travel cover. Average cost: £92.96 per employee, per month.

This is just an example and you don't have to follow this structure. You can create categories that reflect how your own business is organised.

¹ The above example is based on 20 employees (Category 1: aged 42, 55 and 57. Category 2: aged 28, 30, 37, 41 and 52. Category 3: aged 25, 26, 30, 32, 36, 37, 42, 43, 38, 40, 40 and 50), living in Guildford, with a £100 excess and two-year moratorium on pre-existing conditions. Costs are representative as of October 2026, and prices will vary depending on location, cover options and ages.

What is underwriting and how does it affect business health insurance?

Underwriting is how we decide what cover we can offer you, based on your employees ages, medical history and any previous claims. It determines how pre-existing conditions are treated, defined as any condition you've received treatment or medication for, or experienced symptoms of, usually within a set period of time before your cover started.

There are four underwriting options available:

  1. Full medical underwriting
You declare your medical history when you join. Pre-existing conditions aren't usually covered. Any new conditions that develop after your plan starts are covered in line with your plan terms.
  2. Two-year moratorium
You don't need to declare your medical history upfront. Pre-existing conditions from the five years before you joined aren't covered initially. But cover can become available once you've been a member for two continuous years and have been completely trouble-free from that condition for 12 consecutive months since joining.
  3. Continuing medical exclusions
If you're switching from another provider, you can usually carry over the underwriting terms from your previous plan. Conditions that were covered before may continue to be covered, subject to your new plan terms.
  4. Medical history disregarded
With this underwriting option, we accept any pre-existing medical conditions you may have had when you joined us, so you don't need to worry about any underwriting exclusions. Your cover will be in line with the new terms of your plan with us.

How can I keep the cost of my business health insurance down?

Here are some practical ways to manage the cost of your plan:

Pay annually
Save a further 5% by paying your subscription upfront each year rather than spreading the cost monthly.

Choose an excess
Agree to pay a set amount towards treatment costs and reduce your annual subscription. Excess option examples include £100, £250 or £500.

Business Protect
A more budget-friendly plan with access to less hospitals and specialists, rather than our full hospital network that you would have access to with our Business Health plans.

Pay less for using specialists we’ve sourced
Available with Business Health (not available with Extended Cover). We source a specialist and book your appointment at a time that suits you. Any unauthorised treatment will not be covered.
