I have constant lower back pain.

I have constant lower back pain. I have been to a doctor who gave me stretching exercises but I do yoga already with similar stretches. I have had sciatica pain before and this comes and goes but this might be the ongoing issue? What could be my next option - chiropractor, or physio maybe?

There are several possible causes for lower back pain, the most common of which is usually a disc being out of alignment or mildly prolapsed. This could cause pressure onto the sciatic or other nerves, which in turn produces pain across the buttock or thigh and can radiate down the leg.

It can be useful when managing a back problem to specifically pin point the cause before attempting any treatment strategies. As this does seem to have been an ongoing issue you might want to consider talking through with your GP the possibility of arranging an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan. This would determine where in your spine the problem lies and properly inform management and treatment strategies for your problem.

Physiotherapy can be extremely useful alongside medication. Muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medicine are sometimes used to assist in the management of these conditions. In certain cases referral to an orthopaedic specialist may be made depending on how badly a disc is affected.
